Barbara Allyn White, 81, of Elizabethtown passed away peacefully on Tuesday, Jan. 2, 2024 in Elizabethtown.
Ms. White was born on July 17, 1942 in Montague, Mass. to Rae Elaine (Ducharme) and Richard Lamb.
After graduating in 1960 from East Hartford High School in Connecticut, she entered the Women’s Army Corp and headed off to basic training at Ft. McClellan, Ala. Her stories of her time in the military kept family and friends amused for years. She left the military in 1962 after marrying a service member. Policies in that era would not allow a married couple to both serve at the same time.
For many years after serving in the military, she worked various clerical and assistant manager jobs. Fun fact – she was the first newspaper carrier on Fort Knox for The News-Enterprise. She eventually settled into a position with the VA Hospital where she later retired.
She was an avid fan of the New York Yankees, New England Patriots, and UConn women’s basketball. She loved watching all her teams. Reruns of classic western TV shows were something she also enjoyed all her life. Her favorite actor of all time was John Wayne.
She also loved to travel and visit landmarks across the states and Canada. She was truly an adventurous soul. She never met a stranger and always had a smile or story to share with those she encountered.
There wasn’t enough space to list all the shenanigans she got into and the interesting life she led. Her independent course of life only changed when progressing dementia stole her remaining years.
Ms. White was preceded in death by a son, Scott White; her parents; her stepmother, Marion Lamb; a brother, Donald Edward Lamb; and her four lifelong best friends, Bertha Kush, Helen Byrd, Linda Corn, and Linda Toothman.
Survivors include a daughter, Donna (Brian) Walker of Elizabethtown; a son, Rick White of Radcliff; two grandchildren, Keegan and Addison Walker of Elizabethtown; a brother, Richard Lamb of Colorado Springs, Colo.; and a stepsister, Constance (Paul) Schiebler of Phippsburg, Maine.
Visitation will be from 3:30 PM until 6:00 PM, Saturday, January 6, 2024 at Chism Family Funeral Home, Vine Grove, KY.
Funeral services for Ms. White will be held at 6:00 PM, Saturday, January 6, 2024 at the chapel of Chism Family Funeral Home, Vine Grove, KY with Pastor Stuart Jones officiating.
A graveside service with military honors will be held at 2:30 PM, Friday, January 19, 2024 at the Kentucky Veterans Cemetery Central, Radcliff, KY.
