Dorothy Bernadette Gladhill, 75, of Elizabethtown, passed away Saturday, December 6, 2025 at the University of Louisville.

Born on Aug. 7, 1950, to parents John and Dorothy Carney, Dorothy Bernadette Gladhill grew up in Massachusetts. There, her life's story started. She grew up in the chilly, snowy, city life of Boston, where she was the youngest of four children. She spoke often of taking the train to school throughout her life there, until she graduated from South Boston High School in 1969.

On Sept. 4, 1981, Dorothy married Guy Eugene Gladhill in Loveland, Colorado. After he asked if he could make her a cup of tea, they never left one another's side and they later married. They lived throughout the country including Missouri, Arizona, California and Michigan. In their final home in Kentucky, she watched her grandchildren grow and thrive. Dorothy became Guy's caregiver during his more than seven-year battle with dementia.

Dorothy, a member of Grace Lutheran Church in Vine Grove, adored her community there. She also loved mystery and horror novels that, along with her cat, sat on her bookshelves. Dorothy's beloved fellow book lovers, her cats Kit and Bable, will be rehomed with family.

Dorothy was preceded in death by her two brothers, John and James Carney; her parents John and Dorothy Carney; and her husband, Guy Gladhill.

Survivors include her brother, Terence Carney; a son and daughter-in-law, Andrew and Norma Gladhill; her daughter, Erika Ruthman; her three grandchildren, Athena Gladhill, Dominic and wife, Hannah, Gladhill and Kathleen and husband, Jamal McKenzie along with their two children, Rosaleen and Jamal.

Visitation will be from 5:00 PM until 8:00 PM, Thursday, December 11, 2025 and from 9:00 AM until 11:00 AM, Friday, December 12, 2025 at Chism Family Funeral Home.

Funeral services for Ms. Gladhill will be held at 11:00 AM, Friday, December 12, 2025 at the chapel of Chism Family Funeral Home. Burial will follow at the Elizabethtown City Cemetery.
