Eddie J. Gilmore Obituary

Eddie Jerome "EJ" Gilmore, affectionately known as "Eyes" to many and "Tootsie" to family, passed away on March 8, 2025, in Elizabethtown, Kentucky, at the age of 90. Born on October 27, 1934, in Francisville, Louisiana, Eddie lived a life marked by adventure, resilience, and an unwavering dedication to those around him.

Raised by his grandmother, Eddie learned the value of hard work early in life. At just 17 years old, he joined the Army and served in the Korean War. His military service was the start of a remarkable journey that led him through a diverse range of careers. He was a boxer, a barber and beautician, a professional musician and road manager who toured with Fats Domino, a private investigator, a construction worker, a taxi driver, and a notary public. He also held leadership roles as Director of Entertainment on base in Germany and Director of Youth Sports at Fort Knox.

Eddie had an insatiable thirst for knowledge and eagerly embraced new skills, from locksmithing to small engine repair and real estate. His outgoing nature made him a beloved presence wherever he went. He had an incredible ability to remember names and never hesitated to lend a helping hand—whether assisting with the Disabled American Veterans (DAV) organization or engaging in spirited games of Pictionary, trivia, or pool at American Legion Post 113.

Music remained one of Eddie’s greatest passions throughout his life. He loved playing the tenor saxophone and found joy in sharing his musical talents with others. Beyond music, he cherished time spent with family and friends.

Eddie is survived by his children: Eddie Phoenix and his wife Shirley; Eddie G. Gilmore; and Misty Young. He also leaves behind his beloved grandchildren—Eddie Jr., Leisa, Isiah, Dominic, Phoenix, Kennedy, and Makai. He was preceded in death by his grandmother Kitty Veal, mother Fannie Robinson, and his wife Nancy.

Eddie’s life was one of resilience and deep connections. His memory will live on through the countless lives he touched with his kindness and enthusiasm for life.
