Esther Tong Smith Obituary

Esther Tong Smith Obituary

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Esther Smith, who left us peacefully on the morning of Sunday, June 30th, 2024 after a life filled with love and devotion. She was 88 years old.

Esther was the beloved wife of Charles, with whom they shared 49 wonderful years of marriage. Together, they built a life that was a testament to love, resilience, and family.
She was born on January 18, 1936 in Masan, Korea. She was an exceptionally bright student—her father encouraged her to become a school teacher—but she had to work to support her family and care for her three children. After she arrived in the United States, Esther and Charles owned and operated Smith Oriental Food Store for over two decades. Esther was also deeply involved in volunteering at church, where she taught Bible classes, actively participated in choir, assisted with cooking, and selflessly contributed wherever she was needed.

Esther and Charles were blessed to raise their cherished grandson, Matthew, from infancy to adulthood. He was their special joy and a source of strength, often the bond that kept them strong during challenging times. Their love for him was boundless, and he remains a living symbol of their enduring commitment to family.

In addition to her husband and grandson, [Esther] leaves behind a loving family: her three children, Mi-Kyong, Su-Kyong, and Chang-Hyuk, as well as their spouses; her siblings, Tong Hui and her husband, Gary, Tong-Hai, and her brothers in Korea; and three adoring grandchildren, George, Katie and Joanna. She was loved deeply by all, and her presence in their lives was marked by a blend of tender care and, at times, loving nagging that only she could give.

The day before her passing, with family gathered by her side, a reflection of the love and unity she fostered. Her legacy of kindness, strength, and love will live on in the hearts of all who knew her.

Esther will be profoundly missed, but her spirit will remain with her family always. Her family takes comfort in knowing she is at peace with God, Jesus, and Holy Spirit in Heaven, and in the shared memories that will forever keep her close.
