Gerald William Lowery Obituary
Gerald William Lowery, passed away on Thursday, June 13th, 2024 at the age of 73.
Gerald was born in 1950 in Bowling Green, KY to Clarence and Lena Lowery. In his younger years, attending L.C. Curry Elementary and Bowling Green High School, friends knew him by his nickname Jerry. In school he excelled in academics, basketball and football. Following high school, he graduated from Western Kentucky University with a Bachelors and Masters degree in Education. Teaching quickly became a passion for him educating students at Fordsville High School, J.T. Alton Middle School and North Hardin High School. His love for teaching and connecting with students was so strong he always claimed he felt like he never worked a day during his 35 years of teaching. His other passion during those years was coaching multiple sports including football, girls basketball and girls softball as well as his sons’ soccer, football and baseball teams. In 2015 he was named to the North Hardin Athletics Hall of Fame and still holds the best overall record at North Hardin for Girls Softball. Before and after retirement he spent years in the central office and as a professor at McKendree University and ECC.
Gerald was always known for telling a good story, sharing scientific tidbits about everyday life and cracking a good joke. In his personal time, he enjoyed fishing, cars, good music, yardwork, coin collecting, astronomy, watching Andy Griffith, cheering on the Kentucky Wildcats and attending his granddaughters sporting events as their #1 fan.
In 1961 he met the love of his life and soulmate Wanda Lowery. Gerald and Wanda were childhood sweethearts from 6th grade through high school, marrying in 1969 in Bowling Green, KY. Through nearly 55 years of marriage they enjoyed traveling, dinners, movie matinees, visiting with family and friends and could always be seen holding hands. A loving and devoted father, he was endlessly proud of his two sons Brian and Scott and doted on them to anyone that would listen.
Preceded in death by his parents, Clarence and Lena Lowery.
Survived by his wife, Wanda Lowery, two sons Brian Lowery (Elizabeth Russo Lowery) and Scott Lowery (Kristy Kostelnik Lowery), and four granddaughters who were the light of his life: Reese, Kate, Carsyn, and Lily. Also survived by his brother Harold Lowery, sister Faye Givens, and many nieces and nephews.
