Stephen Michl Obituary

Stephen Matthew Michl, beloved brother and friend, was the seventh child of Sylvester and Betty Michl born on January 27th, 1963 in Keokuk, IA. He passed away on October 14th, 2019 at his home in Guston, KY.

Steve attend Catholic Schools and graduated from Cardinal Stritch High School in 1981. After graduation, he was an EMT and later joined the Army National Guard in Keokuk. While in the National Guard, Steve’s job required that he work with the ATRRS helpdesk, ran by ASM Research. Steve was such a wealth of knowledge that ASM offered him a job, moving him to Northern Virginia. This career lasted over 20 years, until Steve medically retired.

While at ASM, Steve worked many contracts, most of them supporting the Army’s Office of the Surgeon General. Steve was on the forefront of moving the Army medical and readiness communities into the brave new world of the World Wide Web. He created reporting databases that unit commanders used to improve their readiness during deployments. Steve was well respected in that community and many of the things he built were so forward-facing that decades later they are still providing service to the service members and veterans that he loved supporting. He definitely carried his love for his brothers-in-arms and the military mission with him when he left the service.

After working several years on the Army Personnel Command project, he was moved to Kentucky, where he stayed on the project until retirement. This move turned out to be a wonderful decision for Steve, where he quickly formed a great group of friends and the laid-back Kentucky lifestyle certainly suited him.

Steve had a personality that shone bright, with a warm smile that made everyone he met feel comfortable. He loved spending time with his family, friends, and his cherished pets. Steve’s passions involved cooking (especially Alton Brown recipes), grilling out, target shooting, rebuilding and riding his vintage Triumph motorcycle, and later restoring his hot-rod Ford Falcon.

Steve was preceded in death by his parents, Sylvester “Mike” and Betty (Londrie) Michl, brothers John, Vince, and Joe, sister Theresa Ringstrom, nephews Brian and Joseph.

He is survived by sisters Beth Schaefer of rural Adair County, MO; Linda (Joe) Greenstreet of Monmouth, IL, Michele Michl of rural Clark County, MO; and Mary Michl, of Keokuk, IA. Nephew Joseph Ragar, Nieces Maria Michl, Dena O’Day, Taylor Huston, and Lexy Orr. Two grandnephews, aunt, uncle, and numerous cousins; and his Kentucky family, Donna DeRossett, Al Withem, Austin Withem, Dalton Withem, Memphis Withem, Achilles Withem, Brooklyn Withem, Steve Meeks, Terry Reesor, Bubba Benham, Glenda Benham, Nadine Ingram, Ron Simons, Myra Simons, David Wright, Jeff Taylor, Don Broxson, Marcia Dobbs-Wilson, Paul Zerkow, Brenda Zerkow, and Matt Pike.

Visitation will be from 5:00 PM until 8:00 PM Monday and from 9:00 AM until 10:30 AM Tuesday at Chism Family Funeral Home, Vine Grove, KY. A prayer service will be held at 7:00 PM Monday at the funeral home.
